After postponing due to inclement weather from a last minute winter storm, we are pleased to announce we have a new date and location for our Eastern Regional Folklife Network Meeting in Hazard, KY! Mark your calendars for Saturday April 9, 2022 from 10am-3:30pm at the Perry County Public Library!
The details haven’t changed. We are planning for two workshops, lunch and some time at the end for feedback and information from The Kentucky Folklife Network.
This free event, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, will include two workshops, lunch and a debrief and information on the Kentucky Folklife Network. The first hands-on workshop will focus on Folk Arts & Education, presented by Judy Sizemore and Nicole Musgrave, which includes a certificate of participation for a standard aligned workshop integrating folk arts across the curriculum. This will provide teachers and community members with ideas for activities for engaging students in researching and documenting their own communities. Activities are aligned to standards in Social Studies, Reading, and Writing, Visual and Performing Arts, and Media Arts and empower students to understand primary and secondary sources through hands-on activities. There will also be suggestions for documenting local artists and tradition bearers and sharing community research through media, writing, or theater.
The second workshop is focused on Oral History in Practice presented by Kentucky Folklife Program Director Brent Björkman and Folklife Specialist Joel Chapman. This will teach the basics of oral history interviews, including hands-on experience with recording equipment and a chance to practice interviewing skills. Lunch and opportunities to learn more about Kentucky Folklife Network and ways to get involved will be included.
Feel free to reach out to us for any questions, we can’t wait to see you in Eastern Kentucky!
